Would a Star Trek style transporter be able to transport the soul?

The question is considering the idea of the 'soul', whether it be the fundamentalist christian's version, the new age ideas of cosmic beings or even just some conscious energy. We all know a transporter can move physical material, but what about the soul? Would all these people just be soulless zombies after their trip?
